God and his Remnant

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this. (2 Kings 19:31)

Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. (Isaiah 1:9)

For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. (Isaiah 10:22)

All throughout the Bible, there is a remnant mentioned. The word used, remnant, according to dictionary.com means; “a remaining, usually small part, quantity, number, or the like.” The Remnant of Gods people, now those under the New Covenant, have been a minority for a long time. Truth has long been the minority, and the question arises; will God’s minority triumph?

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. (1 Kings 19:10)

This brings to mind the testing of Elijah. He was so depressed by the fact that the wicked Queen of Israel, Jezebel, was trying to kill him, that he fled far into the desert and begged God to let him die. Gods response?

Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him. (1 Kings 19:18)

What is God saying? He’s saying that he has preserved, or, left, seven thousand that have not bowed to Baal. Notice how he preserved his remnant. This is a promise to us, that he will not allow his Truth to go away. His Holy Word, which is all Truth, will not be defeated, not even if some petty Jezebel or Ahab comes seeking to destroy and kill those who profess it. God will work, and use his people to triumph over the instruments of the Devil here on this Earth. He never fails us!

  1. Well said, Stephen. Despite every effort of man and our common enemy, God’s Truth will always prevail in the end. He will always preserve a remnant of His people who will triumph and be restored.
